Profile
Mission Trails is working in conjuction with Kansas Trails Council. Their website is kansastrailscouncil.org.
Mission Trails received a $10,000 grant from Sunflower Foundation through its Paving the Way-From Blazing Trails to Building Community grant and education program, which is supporting Kansas communities at various stages of public-access trail development with customized planning support, technical assistance, and peer learning opportunities. Mission Trails is excited for both the $10,000 grant and the knowledge, resources and support that come with the program. The goal is to build multi-use trails that will last and become a valuable asset for Horton and the surrounding community.
We are actively exploring adding a multi-use gravel or asphalt trail from Hickory Point to the swimming pool and park area with sitting areas plus educational and artist pieces. A multi-use trail means the trail would be built for many different people and activities, such as walking, running, biking, pushing strollers and giving families a safe place to enjoy the outdoors together. These are expensive to install so all donations are helpful. The cost of having a company install a mile gravel trail would be about $63,000. For just gravel it costs approximately $14,000. We have an amazing start to get us there, due to donations previously made through South Brown County Community Foundation (SBCCF). Please consider donating during Match Days, July 14-16, 2026 at the Horton Blue Building from 4:30-7:30pm during the Brown County Fair. You may also contribute online during that time at this website!
Potential workdays coming in the fall of 2026. We would love to have volunteers join us in making these trails for our community!
The best time to scout a trail is in the winter. The best time to build a trail is fall, winter and early spring. Come join the adventure!
